A "Suite" Design
Doug and Judy Dahlke contacted Accessibility
Design to assist them with a remodel to create a master bedroom/bathroom
suite that would address the needs of their 11-year-old son, Brock. Planning
to do the construction themselves, the Dahlke's recognized the need for
design assistance to consider and accommodate Brock's changing needs,
responsibilities, and abilities as he grows. The design company chosen
would need insight and an understanding of their circumstances to transform
their needs into a structural environment solution. Accessibility Design
has these skills.
Accessibility Design's knowledge of and experience with appropriate products were important in this project's success.
Creative design and the use of these key products will allow Brock's suite to be functional for his independent use now,
as well as for future caregiving needs.
Features of the "Master Suite" include:
- Ceiling-mounted track lift system to assist with transfers and transportation throughout the suite
(e.g., bed, wheelchair, toilet, spa tub, and dressing table)
- Accessible vanity
- Dressing table accessible from the ceiling mounted track system with built-in storage for personal
care items in place of a closet
- Exterior door/egress route from suite
- Spacious bedroom with floor play area, wheelchair turning space, and custom-built accessible desk
More than anything else,
Accessibility Design guided us through the product selection process to ensure the equipment chosen was appropriate
for Brock's abilities. There are products in the bathroom that we would have never known about if not for the knowledge
and vendor resources of Accessibility Design. As a result, Brock has a bedroom he loves and it will be accessible for
years to come, even as he grows. Jane understands the importance of making a space not just accessible, but truly functional
as well.
