The Dahlke Residence

A "Suite" Design

Doug and Judy Dahlke contacted Accessibility Design to assist them in creating a master bedroom/bathroom suite for their 11-year-old son, Brock. The Dahlkes planned to do the construction themselves, but they recognized the need for design assistance in considering and accommodating Brock's changing needs, responsibilities, and abilities as he grows. Their design partners would need insight and understanding in order to transform their needs into a structural environment solution. Accessibility Design was just right for the job.

Creating Accessibility for Children
Accessibility Design's knowledge of and experience with appropriate products were important in this project's success. Creative design and the use of these key products will allow Brock's suite to be functional for his independent use now, as well as for future caregiving needs.

Accessibility Design's solution included:

  • Ceiling-mounted track lift system to assist with transfers and transportation throughout the suite (e.g., bed, wheelchair, toilet, spa tub, and dressing table)
  • An accessible vanity
  • A dressing table, accessible from the ceiling-mounted track system, with built-in storage for personal care items in place of a closet
  • An exterior door/egress route from suite
  • A spacious bedroom with floor play area, wheelchair turning space, and custom-built accessible desk

"Brock has a bedroom he loves, and it will be accessible for years to come, even as he grows. Jane understands the importance of making a space not just accessible, but truly functional as well."
